Mamadou Nilon Camara, known by his nickname "Mr. Nilon", was the first to create a shop manufacturing djembes in Conakry, Guinea, and one of the founding fathers of the group ''Ensemble instrumental", with the late Sory Kindia Kouyate.
I first met Mr. Nilon in 1996. He was the very first drum maker M'Bemba (Bangoura) introduced me to. He was all things: serious, funny, entertaining, and kind. Over the years we met a few times when I was there. He is responsible for teaching many people, drum makers all over, including his nephews who are part of our team today: Oumar Conde, Mamoudou Diallo, Mamadou Camara and Saliou Camara. Youmoussa Yambig Sylla, Director of Production at Wula Drum, comments that "Mr. Nilon had consistently advised directly over the years and because of him and through his advice, has helped all our efforts."
I remember him fondly and he will be missed!
