This video explains the kyrin, also known as "log drum" or "slit drum". This loud and clear instrument used to be used to communicate messages across long distances in West Africa. It could be said that the kyrin is the original telephone! The kyrin has since been adapted into modern Guinea ballet repertoire and it can play djembe phrases with its two sounds (just like "tone" and "slap"). Played with two sticks, the player can "ride" on the edge of the kyrin between tones for a funky sound.
